What are you doing to stay fit?
As mentioned, winter is a critical time to make changes to your strength since it is much harder to do when in season. Muscle imbalance leads to injury and technical errors. For instance, if you have weak shoulder stabilizers, it can lead to issues with controlling the oar into the catch. If you have problems with core stabilization, it can lead to shooting the tail on the drive. Core stabilization is probably one of the most important off-season developments a athlete can do. Core stabilization can be done in 5-10 minutes three times a week. If you need ideas, drop by room 325.
What’s so cool about rowing?
I found rowing in college. The coolest thing to me was that I was starting at the same point as everyone else – no experience. Unlike soccer, basketball, football, etc. most people have not been rowing since they were 5. There are no travel teams and summer camps fo 10 year olds in rowing. So in High School, if you have never rowed before, you can still be competitve with the others. You don’t feel like you will never catch up with the athletes who have “dedicated their life” to the sport since they were 6. And particularly for me, I loved the fact that there was a lightweight category. Like wrestling, weight categories help even the playing field for those of us who are not quite as big, but still want to work hard and have fun competing.
Improve Your Cardiovascular Fitness with Cross Training
Hey all, I think cross training is key in the winter. Running is one way to keep and improve cardiovascular fitness. If you are interested in running with me (only if it does not conflict with erg practices nor take the place of), give me a call or email. I run Tuesday, sometimes Wednesday, and Fridays after school. It is always easier to workout with someone that alone!
